I’ve been having a great time building an app around a passion that I have, horses. But why build an app for Equestrians and is there a business there? Yes there is and let me tell you why.
I grew up on a farm in Minnesota and was around all kinds of animals including horses. As a small boy, the horses where big animals that were always curious and fun to be around. Then we moved to the city and left the farm life behind. That farm and country life never left my mind and after successful career in technology I’ve been fortunate enough to bring a little of the country lifestyle back into my life. With my sons off to college, we decided to add 3 horses to our lives. Crazy?
After having these wonderful animals with us everyday of our lives for a year getting to ride them, train them and just watch them in the pastures, it kind of like the dream story you always hear. But, in owning 1,300 pound beasts, you have to manage, feed and care for them too. That costs time, money and many other people involved.
So, what does any person that has been in the software business for 25 years do? You look for an app to help manage with all that. And I found exactly nothing that I would like to use. Oh, I found some 90’s looking applications, but basically nothing. So, I started out just creating something to help me manage around my barn. But once I got going and sharing with my new equestrian friends, many of them convinced me to make it so they could use it and connect to the horses too.
After doing my research, I found the following
- Over 9.2 million horses in the United States
- 7.1 million people in the United States involved in the equine business
- 1.4 million full-time jobs
- $112.1 billion dollar eonomic impact
Sure, this is no Facebook or Snapchat startup opportunity, but who is even trying for that anymore? Sometimes looking in odd places develop great new business opportunities if you structured it right for the audience. It’s powerful and allow people to stay connected in the care and enjoyment of these wonderful horses through an app on their phones.

The “Be Your Own Data Analyst” has been great for software companies that provide dashboarding tools, but do they really provide the kind of insights you need to manage your goals and objectives when running your department or business?
Oh sure, you can tell me that your department has 5 or 10 dashboards that provide some insights into their performance. But seeing historical trends is just one piece to running a truly great business. To be one of the great companies, you need to set goals and objectives and then monitor your progress against them. Dashboarding software doesn’t really do a good job of this.
Oh, am I’m sure someone is out there trying to selling you their new machine learning AI that will tell you what the numbers should be. The AI will crunch through your bigdata and actually find the golden nugget. But again, that AI needs goals to be able to work it’s magic against too.
While times are good, now is the BEST time to reassess your department and business objectives and set the goals you need to hit to meet those objectives. Your software needs to provide a simple Green, Yellow and RED indicators on how you are against those objectives allow you to adjust in real-time and not after the dashboard refreshes next month. It really can be as simple as that.

Just like your morning coffee, millions of people will be logging onto their corporate networks and checking the status of their business through metrics. With all the dashboarding products made by the biggest vendors, that job has gotten much harder over the years. WHAT?! Yes, that is a strong statement, but true. We used to have just a few dashboards to review, now we have 25 personal dashboards scattered across many servers or in the cloud that we have to find. Never mind the corporate wide dashboards on another 10 servers. People are emailing PDF’s from the dashboarding tools and don’t forget those finance people emailing you Microsoft Excel spreadsheets too. You get my drift…
Wouldn’t it just be better and faster if you could just whip out your phone and see the metrics that matter most to you? Type a couple letters into the search box and quickly get back the metrics that match? Now you can!

When I launched Atlas Insights in the middle of January 2017, I wasn’t sure what the uptake would be on a new mobile business intelligence solution in the marketplace. Tableau has a lite client, Microsoft has PowerBI client for its dashboards, but would an entrant be worthy enough to jump into the mix?
After 7 months, Atlas Insights just broke a major milestone of over 500 installs! That is pretty amazing considering we don’t have the budget that Tableau and Microsoft can spend to build a brand. The goal was “not to be the first to the market with a product, just make it the better than the rest”. Atlas Insights is completely different because we focus on a mobile-1st experience with actionable data, first and foremost, while other makes you wade through a sea of dashboards trying to figure out what each chart means.
That’s a powerful statement. Just how long do you spend staring at a dashboard trying to figure out what it means and what you can to do with it? Too long.

We really like the bold statement Apple has created with the New RED iPhone so much we just had to get one to see how AWESOME our app looks on it. We were right, it looks AWESOME!

In June of 2016, I began the effort of building a new mobile business intelligence app called Atlas Insights. Atlas allows you to take your business metrics and also public metrics with you wherever you might be. Basically, having your most important metrics available whenever you need them is the mantra . In October I launched my beta and finished up in December of 2016. Pretty amazing development speed huh?! I’ll have another blog on that later. As I have built this business, I have tried to be transparent and informative via my blog on the startup and software development process as I go along.
In all my years of designing and developing software, one metric all developers want to monitor closely is downloads. Now with having to support so many platforms from Apple, Google and Microsoft, tracking these stats is actually pretty easy. Today, I spent time visiting all the app store reporting pages to get a gauge on the downloads for Atlas and I came across VERY surprised.
The following chart is “Installs by Platform“. Right away you see an amazing slice for Apple! Now I would say I’m a bit Microsoft biased because I worked there and then I built a business off of them. Even in my marketing, I’m very balanced in that I market each company platform basically the same. But I’m just SHOCKED that 75% of my downloads are on the Apple platform. iPhone you may be thinking?
So let’s break it all down to get an understanding of what makes up those slices of the pie. The next chart is “Installs by Device“. Because Apple made up so much of the pie, if we look at the slices you’ll be shocked to see that MAC/OSX has 57% of the installs! In all my years of doing analytics and dashboards, the MAC users where never on the minds of the developers. I saw this as an opportunity and produced a MAC client of Atlas Insights and I’ve been overwhelmed with the response.
Isn’t that pretty awesome!? I’m going to continue to build for all platforms, but I will push the BEST business intelligence experience on the MAC/OSX that there has ever been!
