The “Be Your Own Data Analyst” has been great for software companies that provide dashboarding tools, but do they really provide the kind of insights you need to manage your goals and objectives when running your department or business?
Oh sure, you can tell me that your department has 5 or 10 dashboards that provide some insights into their performance. But seeing historical trends is just one piece to running a truly great business. To be one of the great companies, you need to set goals and objectives and then monitor your progress against them. Dashboarding software doesn’t really do a good job of this.
Oh, am I’m sure someone is out there trying to selling you their new machine learning AI that will tell you what the numbers should be. The AI will crunch through your bigdata and actually find the golden nugget. But again, that AI needs goals to be able to work it’s magic against too.
While times are good, now is the BEST time to reassess your department and business objectives and set the goals you need to hit to meet those objectives. Your software needs to provide a simple Green, Yellow and RED indicators on how you are against those objectives allow you to adjust in real-time and not after the dashboard refreshes next month. It really can be as simple as that.

Just like your morning coffee, millions of people will be logging onto their corporate networks and checking the status of their business through metrics. With all the dashboarding products made by the biggest vendors, that job has gotten much harder over the years. WHAT?! Yes, that is a strong statement, but true. We used to have just a few dashboards to review, now we have 25 personal dashboards scattered across many servers or in the cloud that we have to find. Never mind the corporate wide dashboards on another 10 servers. People are emailing PDF’s from the dashboarding tools and don’t forget those finance people emailing you Microsoft Excel spreadsheets too. You get my drift…
Wouldn’t it just be better and faster if you could just whip out your phone and see the metrics that matter most to you? Type a couple letters into the search box and quickly get back the metrics that match? Now you can!

When I launched Atlas Insights in the middle of January 2017, I wasn’t sure what the uptake would be on a new mobile business intelligence solution in the marketplace. Tableau has a lite client, Microsoft has PowerBI client for its dashboards, but would an entrant be worthy enough to jump into the mix?
After 7 months, Atlas Insights just broke a major milestone of over 500 installs! That is pretty amazing considering we don’t have the budget that Tableau and Microsoft can spend to build a brand. The goal was “not to be the first to the market with a product, just make it the better than the rest”. Atlas Insights is completely different because we focus on a mobile-1st experience with actionable data, first and foremost, while other makes you wade through a sea of dashboards trying to figure out what each chart means.
That’s a powerful statement. Just how long do you spend staring at a dashboard trying to figure out what it means and what you can to do with it? Too long.

On some days, building an app is much easier than picking a brand and logo. But I think we nailed it with this logo. The top of the E being made into the back of the horse is perfect. What do you think?
There many emotions that you experience when building an app. Finalizing a logo and brand is dreadful because there is no going back. Sometimes picking colors and fonts for the UI/UX is the most painful and time consuming. But coding the features and functions is easy and gives you a great feeling as it comes together. http://www.EquestrianApp.com #watchthejourney #horse #startup
One of the first apps I created was right after I graduated from college when I created “Assistant Basketball Coach”, which allowed coaches to capture the statistics of the game into a database for analysis and reporting during and after the game. It was probably one of the most fun applications that I ever created because it was a niche app that focused on a primary passion I enjoyed. The software was used by thousands of coaches around the world at its peak, until I sold that business in 1998. After that, I was onto creating and selling enterprise software for years which was a lot of fun, but can also be quite unfulfilling.
Now, fast forward several years. I’ve had an opportunity to “go back to the farm” if you will, and added a few horses to my property. In learning and working with these horses, I’ve found that the community of equestrians out there, do not have a system or app that allows them to connect everyone in the care and enjoyment of these wonderful equine animals. After several months of research and visiting a lot of horse owners, boarders, leaser’s, trainers, vets and more, I believe I found my next app adventure. I hope you tag along with the adventure.
I will blog on the design, development and beta testing through this medium and also at http://EquestrianApp.com
How many if you arrived at work today and the first thing you did was open your browser to browse to an intranet site to see your company dashboards? Probably less than 1% of you did. And then, you drilled and sliced and filtered to find your data. How long did that take you? Probably more than 15 to 30 minutes. After a while you probably gave up. Am I correct?
